A man in his 30s is recovering in hospital after being mauled in a suspected American XL bully dog attack over the heatwave weekend. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed they have seized four XL bullies devil dogs following the attack on Rochdale Road, in Pimhole, Bury, on Sunday lunchtime.

A police cordon was in place close to the junction with Tinline Street with a number of GMP officers going door to door taking statements. Multiple police vehicles and officers could be seen on scene and the man, in his 30s, was seen coming out of a building on the road with “bloodstains on his shirt and trousers”. The XL bully breed are banned after a number of fatal attacks.

Cllr Ummrana Farooq of Bury East, the ward where the incident took place, said: “Any residents who are concerned don’t need to worry, the police are just doing their job.”

Police have stressed the man was rushed to hospital for treatment after he suffered non life-threatening and non-life changing injuries.

One worker in a nearby takeaway described seeing a man with blood on clothes as emergency services arrived at the scene.

He said: “We had just opened up and we saw a few police vans and an ambulance pull up outside. Then a guy came in the shop to get two drinks.

“He had blood on his clothes, but he said ‘Don’t worry it’s not my blood’. The police went inside a flat to check and then another guy walked in the ambulance, but he didn’t have any blood on him and he looked normal.

“There were a couple of dogs I saw the police take away.”

Afterwards a Greater Manchester police spokesperson said they continue to investigate the incident and no-one has yet been arrested.

GMP said: “At around 12.35pm this afternoon (Sunday), we were called to a suspected dog attack on Rochdale Road in Bury. Officers attended the scene and located a man in his 30s with non-life threatening/non-life changing injuries.

“He has been taken to hospital for treatment. No arrests have been made and four suspected XL bullies have been seized by officers from the Bury District.”

Meanwhile a four-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man also suffered minor injuries in a separate dog attack in Littleborough, Rochdale on Sunday morning.

A dog, understood to be an American Akita, was seized by police following the attack on Hawkins Way at about 11am.
