A gran was left “shaken” after two XL Bullies smashed through her fence, “dragged her along the floor” killed her family dog.
Bradley Ward says nan Freda Jones has been “blaming herself” after her beloved pet Guinness, a two-year-old mini Schnauzer, died during the vicious attack in South Normanton, Derbyshire.
The shocking incident left the 77-year-old with a bloody injury to her wrist after one of the dogs latched onto her arm before “dragging her along the ground,” reports DerbyshireLive.
Bradley, 27, said: “She was walking Guinness at around 10am like she does every morning.
“She heard loud barking from one of the nearby properties before a loud crash saw one of the dogs burst through a fence, with the other following behind.
“She was dragged along the floor and was completely helpless at that moment.”
Bradley says a neighbour rushed onto the street after hearing the order. He says the man “wrestled” the dogs to save Freda.
Despite the neighbour being a “big and strong lad”, Bradley says he struggled to fight off the dog due to its sheer size and strength.
Guinnes was rushed to the vets but died a shortwhile later. He suffered a puncture wound from the second XL Bully.
Despite not being in favour of the XL Bully ban, Bradley said that it takes a physically strong person to handle the breed, adding that owners should be specially trained in order to prevent events like this in future.
He added: “I’m angry that this has been allowed to happen, not just because my dog was killed but because my elderly grandmother has been left traumatised following the incident.
“Friends from the area have told me that they are now refusing to walk their dogs in the area until they know that the dogs are off the streets.
“Guinness had already died when we picked him up from the vet later that day. He was wrapped in a blanket and I couldn’t bring myself to look at him.
“We’ve had dogs in the past, mostly Staffies, but when a dog grows old you are normally prepared for the worst – but this was different, it was so sudden and we’ve still not recovered.”
Derbyshire Constabulary issued a statement following the incident. A spokesman said: “We were called to reports of a dog and a woman being injured by another dog in Albert Street, South Normanton at around 10am on Sunday 4 February.
“The dog which was injured later died. The owner of the dog which caused the injuries has been interviewed and enquiries are ongoing. Anyone who has any information which could help with our investigation is asked to contact us quoting the reference 24*71348.”
