This tourist destination has been largely closed off to international flights, but it’s finally getting a new airport.

Greenland is a great place to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. The island is the world’s largest, and 80% of the island is covered in ice.

After years of needing a new airport, the country will finally see the development made soon. A new airport has not been built before due to infrastructure issues and the need for longer runways.

However, the new revamped Nuuk Airport has a special 2,000-metre runway that will allow bigger planes from global destinations to land.

Before this upgrade, the runway was just 950 metres in length. In a huge development for the country, in the summer of 2025, direct flights will be connecting Nuuk to the US, Canada, Iceland, and Denmark.

This is the first time Greenland will be connected to these countries. Despite this, flights from the UK are not yet available as there is no direct line between Greenland and the UK.

From March 2025, there will be bi-weekly services to Reykjavik Keflavik Airport and five flights per week to Copenhagen Airport.

There will be direct routes to two airports in Denmark, Billund and Aalborg.

Flights to New York will be available from 15 June, and they will be with United Airlines, which will run twice weekly.

Nuuk is the capital of Greenland but is quite small considering its status as the island’s main city. So, it’s not surprising that it’s taken a while to get more flights off the ground there.

In 2026, two more airports are set to open in the south of the island.

The new development will benefit the people of Greenland, who will be able to travel to more places more easily, and also for its tourism prospects.

Greenland Airports CEO Jens Lauridsen said: “This is a truly historic milestone that will create a world of new opportunities for the entire country, as it will, for the first time, enable direct flights across the Atlantic to the nation’s capital.”

“Imagine leaving Nuuk in the morning to savour French cuisine in Paris the same night. Today marks the start of a new era for Greenland.”
