The quintessential tuna mayo sandwich, a cherished staple of British cuisine, is renowned for its wonderful blend of tastes and textures that suit any occasion, from relaxed outdoor gatherings to sophisticated dinner parties.
Canned tuna represents a pantry essential for countless households as it delivers an economical and practical protein source. While it’s frequently regarded as an inexpensive meal solution, it boasts an extensive array of health advantages, including substantial protein and omega-3 levels.
However, while tins of tuna typically cost between 50p and £2 at leading supermarkets, there are also pricier options available.
While it may seem peculiar to spend more on essentially the identical product, one lady called Shann, recognised online as ‘Pumpkin_bakery’, chose to purchase a ‘luxury’ tin of tuna to determine whether it justified the additional expense.
“One thing that really pi***es me off, yeah, is that silly, posh £6.50 tinned tuna. Who is shelling out £6.50 on a tin of tuna? That is ridiculous,” Shann declared at the beginning of her TikTok clip.
However, she then went onto reveal she bought herself a can of the tuna in question to see if it was really worth the hefty price tag, or if it tasted the same as more budget-friendly brands.
She went on to explain the cheaper alternative, Prince’s Tuna, which costs about £1.59 for one can of tinned tuna is one of the best ranked tunas in the UK, according to Trolley.co.uk.
“Anyway, I’ve been eyeing up this tuna for ages and then putting it off, because tinned tuna to me feels like a cheap food, like something I’m buying because I want to make a cheap, quick, fairly healthy meal,” she said. “It is not gourmet, it’s something to put on a delicious, cheap jacket potato.”
The brand of tuna in question is made by Conservas Ortiz, and their tinned tuna can be found in Ocado, as well as Waitrose, and Sainsbury’s, where one 158g tin of tuna in olive oil costs between £6-£6.50.
However, her curiosity got the better of her and she decided to give the pricey tin of tuna a go. In her video, Shann was seen baking her own bread, and making a homemade mayonnaise which she then used to create a tuna mayo mixture to add into her sandwich with some cheese which then got melted.

After sampling the tuna with a fork straight from the tin before having it in her sandwich, Shann revealed her verdict, and she wasn’t pleased with it.
“It is, unfortunately, maybe the best tuna I’ve ever had,” she said. “And since eating this, all I can think about is getting my next tuna fix.
“I’m either gonna be bankrupt, or I’m gonna have mercury poisoning. I just don’t know which one is gonna take me out first,” she jokingly added. She then penned in the caption of her video: “Conservas Ortiz I’m sorry I ever doubted you this was incredible. To be honest if you get this tuna don’t bother making anything with it just eat it out of the tin.”
Viewers quickly flocked to the comment section of the clip to commend Shann for her culinary talents, with numerous people revealing they were now keen to sample the ‘posh’ tuna.
“I don’t even like tuna but I want this SO BADLY,” one person said. Someone else wrote: “I’ve literally got a tin of this in the cupboard i’m going to have to replicate this.”
Another person wrote: “Crying because, to me, Princes is the posh tuna.”
