While adopting an animal in need is extremely rewarding, it also comes with its challenges, especially when you don’t know much about its background.
However one woman couldn’t help but laugh when she discovered her new rescue dog wasn’t ignoring her commands, he just couldn’t understand what she was saying.
In a TikTok video, user @itsyoso_xx shared how her family adopted a Maltipoo who only understand Spanish.
They came to the realisation after speaking to him in English – ordering him to ‘sit’, ‘bed’, even telling him it’s ‘dinner time’ – but all the while he stood there with a puzzled look on his face.
Her caption reads: “When your rescue dog hasn’t been listening but you find out he only speaks Spanish.”
In her clip, much to the family’s amusement, the pooch is seen sitting on command when told to ‘sit’ in Spanish rather than English.
Sharing how they made the discovery, the TikTok user said: “I’m half Hispanic so I know a little. He was going crazy barking so I just yelled cálmate and he stopped and just looked me like he understood.”
So from now on it seems they’ll all have to become bilingual for their new pet.
Commenting on their post, one user said: “Now you have to sing the Hispanic song for baby’s and pets ‘tiring Tiri tiri’ and grab him by his paws like he’s dancing while singing.”
Another user added: “My poodle is hard of hearing n his previous owner didn’t want him – sad story! But I have him now n he’s my baby I’ve taught him sign language.”
A third user said: “Aww lol. Also try ‘ca-ye-se’ for quiet, ‘vu-elta’ for spin around and signal with your hand, ‘ari-ba’ to get up on the couch or bed.”
Another user said: “Time for you guys to learn Spanish and for him to learn English.”
It comes after a vet urged all dog owners to put a bandana on their pups before taking them out on a walk during a heatwave.
The vet, who is known as @pet_health_daily, has more than 32 years experience working with animals – says he is tried of seeing owners make the same mistakes over and over again. He said: “I’m done watching simple problems turn into big ones.”
The expert goes onto explain the dangers of walking your dog during a heatwave, explaining how dogs do not show signs of overheating and when you notice they’re struggling, it’s usually too late.
He said: “Soak a bandana in cold water, ring it out and tie it loosely around their neck before heading out. It acts like a cooling collar helping regulate their body temperature during walks or playtime.”
