Woman shares ‘life-changing’ hack to unlock supermarket trolleys without a £1 coin

Forgetting to bring a £1 for your weekly shop for the supermarket trolley can be annoying – but this hack could be the solution.

We all know how frustrating it is to arrive at the supermarket for our weekly shop, only to realise we’ve forgotten a £1 coin for the trolley.

This system becomes even more irritating now that most of us don’t carry loose change daily – but there might be an easy fix.

One lady has impressed folks online with her trick that unlocks supermarket trolleys without needing a coin. Even better, there are two ways to do the same trick, so you can choose whichever works best for you.

The trick was shared on TikTok by @tiger_lee_uk, who explained that if you don’t have any coins, you can use a cotton swab, also known as a cotton bud or Q-tip.

All you need to do is push the cotton bud into the coin slot, and the key at the back of the trolley handle will pop out, letting you start shopping.

Then, when you’re done and ready to return the trolley, just push the key back in, and you can easily pull out your cotton bud.

However, while cotton buds are a common item in many bathrooms and have various beauty uses, they’re not something we usually carry in our pockets – as many commenters noted, reports the Mirror.

One person joked: “Oh yeah, I always carry a Q-tip,” while another commented: “If I remember to take a cotton swab I will remember to take a coin.”

Someone else added: “Sometimes I forget the change at home. How do you think I’m gonna remember Q-tips? “.

But there’s more to the woman’s video because she shows another item that can be used which you’re sure to have when you go shopping – your house key.

She demonstrated that by using the round end of a key in the coin slot of a shopping trolley, you can unlock it without needing a £1 coin.

People who watched the whole video were really impressed with this tip, saying it works great. One viewer said: “The house key works!”

Another thanked her for the trick: “Just learnt this trick, thank you,” and someone else was eager to try it out, writing: “Wow, I didn’t know that! I will try it for sure.”

A fourth hailed this hack as “life-changing” as this is their “go-to way” of unlocking trolleys at the supermarket now.
