Windows will shine with two-ingredient cleaning solution that ‘safely kills germs’

As the days grow longer and the sunlight pours in, now is the perfect time to give the windows a thorough clean. After months of winter grime and condensation, glass panes are often left dull, streaked or coated in dust or pollen.

But while it’s tempting to reach for a bottle of chemical glass cleaner, many store-bought sprays come with harsh fumes and ingredients that can linger in your home. Luckily, lifestyle TV personality Martha Stewart has the perfect option for a gentler, more natural way to get your windows sparkling. Martha’s own go-to DIY window cleaner solution comprises of just two natural ingredients you likely already have in your home.

As revealed in a Martha Stewart blog post, this non-toxic yet effective window cleaner requires just water and vinegar.

“During the year, debris and film can build-up on windows, sills and tracks,” she wrote. “Windows should be dusted and washed regularly to keep them sparkling clean. For my windows, I like to use a white vinegar and water solution.

“Vinegar safely kills germs and is much more economical than chemical cleaners – plus, it’s completely non-toxic and anti-bacterial.”

How to clean window with vinegar

To create the solution, begin by mixing equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle.

“Spray a small amount on each pane, being careful not to spray directly on the frames,” she added. “Choose a time of day when the sun is not shining directly on the windows.

“The heat from the sun can cause the cleaning fluid to dry, which will result in streaks or water spots.”

Wipe the vinegar-water solution around entire window with a damp washcloth, making sure to get into the corners.

Martha added: “This can take some time, especially if there are lots of panes in the windows, but it is well-worth the effort to get them sparkling clean.”

Finally, make sure to buff the window with a microfibre or lint-free cloth to get rid of all the streaks.

“Always wipe the windows completely dry to avoid any more film from accumulating,” added Martha.
