A professional window cleaner has revealed their secret for streak-free glass every time. Pets, children and day-to-day life can all lead to a build-up of unsightly marks and smudges on your windows.
There are all kinds of sprays, complex DIY mixtures and tools all claiming to give you gleaming glass, so it can be overwhelming choosing which approach to take. Luckily, the answer is simple. Doug Bryant, a professional window cleaner, shared his go-to solution, as well as the simple technique he swears by.
All he does is add a roughly five pence-sized drop of washing up liquid for every 3.8 litres of boiled water, reports The Spruce.
“Fully submerge your mop and move it around in the solution to stir the soap,” he explained.
Doug also recommended having a duster, hand mop, squeegee with removable rubber blade and some microfibre clothes on hand. Remember to place a towel on the floor to catch any drips and spillages if you’re cleaning windows inside.
When it comes to the method, Doug’s approach is simple. You should first use your duster to remove any dust, dirt and cobwebs from the window.
Then, use your hand mop to apply the soapy water to the glass, making sure to cover the entire surface. Take your squeegee and glide it smoothly and continuously across the window, starting from the top corner and moving down.
Next, wipe the panes down using your microfibre cloths, removing any leftover moisture. You should also wipe the window tracks to prevent any gathered dirt from blowing straight back onto your glass.
Sharing another top tip, Doug said: “When pulling the blade across the glass, make sure the upper edge of the squeegee is ahead of the lower edge by a few degrees. This will prevent lines being left after each pass.”
If you don’t want to use washing up liquid and water, vinegar and alcohol-based solutions will also do the job, though Doug urged people to avoid aerosol or spray glass cleaning solutions.
This is due to their ammonia content, something that can damage your windows over time.
