A well-wisher from the crowd told the princess, “You’re beautiful!” – with the fan careful not to leave William out. They also then shouted out, “You too, William!”
Clearly amused, he replied, “You don’t have to say that, don’t worry!” – a response that left fans that were present in stitches.
Earlier, stepping up onto a podium before a crowd of several hundred BAE employees, their families and the 45-strong ship’s company, Kate uttered the time-honoured words in their presence: “I have the pleasure to name this ship HMS Glasgow, may God bless her and all who sail on her”.
She then flicked up a small red “launch” button to release a bottle of exclusive single malt whisky made by the nearby Clydeside Distillery.
The couple’s latest appearance marked the first time Kate has officially named a naval ship, having christened a new cruise ship, the Royal Princess, in 2013, a lifeboat in 2011, and a polar research ship, which was almost named Boaty McBoatface, in 2019.
The Princess of Wales was appointed as the Sponsor of HMS Glasgow in June 2021 – when the royal was since the Duchess of Cambridge.
HMS Glasgow is a state-of-the-art Type 26 anti-submarine frigate, designed to protect the UK’s nuclear deterrent and aircraft carriers.
