Notorious rapist and killer Josef Fritzl has won his bid for a conditional release from the mental health prison he is currently in, a move which could lead to his permanent release in the future after already serving 15 years in prison.

Fritzl was sentenced to life in prison in 2009 after imprisoning his daughter, Elisabeth, in the basement of his Amstetten home in Austria for 24 years and fathering seven children with her.

However, due to the onset of dementia, he may be relocated to a nursing home to serve the remainder of his sentence.

Below we explore what is known about the beast’s life and crimes before his horrid crimes were finally uncovered.

Who is Josef Friztl?

Josef Fritzl was born in 1935 in Amstetten, Austria, and grew up in a troubled and at times violent.

During his 2009 trial, a psychiatrist testified that Friztl had a difficult childhood due to his mother Maria’s lack of affection, beatings, and frequent abandonment.

According to SPIEGEL, Josef married his wife Rosemarie when he was 21-years-old and immediately took complete control of her life.

Story of Elizabth Fritzl

Fritzl began abusing his daughter Elisabeth, who was about 11 or 12-years-old at the time.

Throughout her teenage years, Elisabeth attempted to run away several times, but she was always caught and brought back.

Elisabeth went missing shortly after turning 18 and Josef Fritzl told friends and family that she had joined a sect.

Horrifying in fact, Fritzl had imprisoned his daughter in a basement dungeon where Elisabeth would spend the next 24 years.

Elizabeth would go on to be raped over 3,000 times by Fritzl who would beat, kick, and force her to reenacting scenes from violent porn films.

She later gave birth to seven babies in the cellar without any medical attention, six of whom survived.
