Many people can be put off buying white socks as it can feel almost impossible to keep them clean, but you can wash them easily if you use the right laundry products.

White socks end up showing stains more due to the lighter and more absorbent fabric, which means they are more likely to become discoloured even after wearing them just once.

It may seem obvious to wash white laundry with bleach to get it clean again, but the harsh chemicals are ineffective against organic stains like sweat and can weaken the fabric.

Instead, Kara Boatner, an expert from Sock Club Custom has shared that a “magic” way to get stained socks white again is to use lemon juice.

Kara said: “Lemon juice is another natural whitening agent that can work wonders on your socks. Squeeze fresh lemon juice into a basin of hot water and soak your socks for about an hour before washing.

“The citric acid helps break down stains and leaves your socks smelling fresh.”

The acidic substance in lemon juice can loosen and dissolve stains from the sock fabric and make it much easier to wash out once you stick them in the laundry.

Not only does lemon juice remove stains but can as a natural bleach to whiten fabric and restore its brightness to make socks look brand new.

How to get socks white again using a natural solution

All you need to do is mix the juice of one or two lemons in a basin filled with warm water.

Put your dirty white socks in the solution and leave them to soak for one hour at most.

Then stick them in the washing machine. Use a laundry detergent as usual but avoid using a fabric softener.

Kara said: “While it might be tempting to use fabric softeners for extra softness, they can actually leave a residue on your socks that attracts dirt and causes discolouration” over time. Skip the fabric softener and opt for a vinegar rinse instead for naturally soft socks.

White vinegar can break up any soapy residue on your socks which will make them feel much softener if they have been feeling hard or uncomfortable.

After your socks have been washed, put them on a rinse cycle and pour 120ml into your washing machine.

Once the socks have been washed then consider hanging them outside to dry in the sun if you can as sunlight will act naturally whiten socks.

Kara said: “The sun’s UV rays act as a natural bleaching agent, helping to whiten and brighten your socks. This method is especially effective for stubborn yellowing that can occur over time.”

Once they are dry your socks should be clean, white and fresh without having to use bleach or other harsh chemical solutions.
