White vinegar should ‘never be used’ to clean 4 areas of your home – including dishwasher

White vinegar has become increasingly popular in recent years to use around the home when cleaning.

Its acetic acid content means it can lift dirt and grease as well as tackle limescale.

While there are a lot of areas it can be used around the home, an expert has warned Britons to steer clear of the washing machine.

Cleaning expert Sarah Dempsey at Myjobquote.co.uk has shared four items that white vinegar should “never” be used on.

1. Washing machine

Many people love to clean their appliances with white vinegar or add them in to aid a wash.

However, according to the expert, it can actually cause “damage” to it.

In fact, due to all the rubber seals and hoses, white vinegar should “never be used” on a washing machine.

Instead, opt for a specialist washing machine cleaning product to make the appliance last longer.

2. Stone worktops

Those who have stone or marble worktops should avoid cleaning with white vinegar as it “dulls and etches” natural stone.

This can make it lose its shine and ultimately cause damage to the stone.

Instead, the expert recommended cleaning worktops with some mild washing-up liquid.

3. Mirrors

Whilst white vinegar is great for cleaning windows, it should be avoided on mirrors.

According to Sarah, the vinegar can penetrate through to the mirror’s backing, the area which makes it shine.

Instead, simply stick to a microfibre cloth along with a little bit of glass spray.

4. Dishwashers

Sarah explained: “[White vinegar] doesn’t actually make much of a difference at all.

“Instead, it’s better to use dishwasher cleaners as these are specially formulated to do the job of cleaning your dishwasher well.”
