Almost half the country is set to be hit with a blast of snow in the next 43 hours and the Met Office has issued yellowing warnings covering a host of major cities.
The urgent alerts mean disruption to transport could be possible and even cuts to power and mobile phone signal is some of the worst hit areas.
From 7pm tonight until 10am tomorrow morning a huge chunk of northern England is expected to get a covering of the white stuff with four inches of snow settling on the higher ground.
The band of Arctic freezing conditions stretches from Newcastle in the north down to Nottingham and Stoke in the Midlands, and across from Liverpool and Manchester in the west to Leeds and Hull in Yorkshire.
Warnings are also in place from 3pm today until 10am tomorrow for the whole of Northern Ireland, and for much of northern Scotland, and the Orkney and Shetland Islands, a yellow alert is in force from 4pm today until 10am on Wednesday.
North Wales also does not escape the wintry wrath, with a warning in place from 7pm today until 10 am on Tuesday.
A statement from the Met Office said Yellow National Severe Weather Warnings for snow and ice are currently in place from Monday to Wednesday, affecting parts of Scotland, the whole of Northern Ireland, and parts of northern England, north Wales and the north Midlands.
Dan Suri is a Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office and said: “An area of low pressure slides its way eastwards on Monday night.
“The associated frontal system, marking the boundary between cold air in the north and milder conditions to the south, will bring disruptive snow to some areas between Monday evening and Tuesday morning.
“This is likely to coincide with rush hour, leading to disruption to some transport routes across a central swathe of the UK on Tuesday morning. It will also be windy in the far south.
“Updates to the warnings throughout the week are likely, so it is important to stay up to date with the latest forecast.”
The weather agency added that as the snow clears pavements and roads could become treacherous as the water turns to ice in some regions.
