When to start mowing your lawn this year – grass must be the 'perfect' height

If lawns are too short when they’re mowed, the grass might become damaged and may not grow back properly.

Chris said: “We recommend that the ideal height of your grass should be around 5cm to 7cm before you cut it, and this goes for all our grass seed mixtures.

“This is simply because if the grass has reached this height, it is viable, growing well and can be cut.

“If it isn’t reaching this height, it either isn’t established, or something is stunting its growth.”

The experts said this height is “perfect” for your lawn’s first mow, however, gardeners need to ensure their mowers are also set to the right height before giving their grass a cut.

Your lawn mower should be on its highest setting to ensure the lawn is not cut too short.

After mowing the lawn, ensure all the clippings have been removed to avoid thatch developing.

Another important rule to remember is not to mow lawns when it’s frosty or when the grass is wet.
