What it really means if your dog tries to lick your feet

While some may find it endearing or even a little annoying, an expert says a dog licking you carries real meaning. Vet Dr Julian Norton, speaking on behalf of Pure Pet Food, explains: “People sometimes ask why dogs nudge and nuzzle with their noses.

“Part of the reason is that dogs really feel part of the family and part of the tribe, and they’re trying to get attention by nuzzling you.” These behaviours are not random – they’re your dog’s way of trying to connect with you.

Dr Norton adds: “It’s quite endearing. I think it’s a bit like when dogs come and lick us on our face or hands or that sort of thing. They’re just really wanting to be part of the family and get some attention.”

According to the vet, licking is often a sign of bonding or emotional check-in. Whether it’s a gentle lick on the hand or an enthusiastic one on the face, your dog may be trying to see how you’re feeling. It’s their way of saying “I care”.

But licking is just one of the many ways dogs express themselves and communicate with their humans. Tail wagging is another behaviour that’s often misunderstood.

While many assume a wagging tail equals a happy dog, the reality is a bit more complex. The height, speed, and stiffness of the wag can signal everything from joy to nervousness.

A high, loose wag usually indicates excitement, while a low, slow wag may suggest anxiety or caution.

Even more surprising is that dogs may “smile” when they’re feeling playful or content. Though not the same as a human grin, some dogs pull their lips back in a way that looks remarkably like a smile.

When this facial expression is paired with relaxed body language and a wagging tail, it’s a clear sign your dog is happy.

These subtle signals, from licking to tail wags to grins, all help build a stronger bond between you and your pet.

Understanding them can lead to a deeper connection and a happier, more confident dog.
