Wetherspoons’ loyal fans have been left gutted after an “outstanding” chicken menu item was quietly removed from the menu. The beloved pub chain has recently given its menu a huge shake-up – and it turns out another fan favourite has been removed from the restaurant’s offerings.
A Wetherspoon spokesperson confirmed The Chicken Wings Basket meal is no longer available. A Spoons customer expressed confusion at the decision on Reddit, writing: “Why in the ever-loving f*** did Wethos get rid of the wings basket? My heart is broken.”
The meal comprised crispy chicken wings served in a basket alongside coleslaw and a selection of sauces.
One person said: “The best meal at Wetherspoons is the chicken wings basket, change my mind!”
The meal was removed from the menu on May 14.
However, the chicken wings are still available on the menu but as a small plate dish and as part of the pub chain’s “wings, strips and bites” offer.
Also, customers can still get the Boneless Basket, which is three southern-fried chicken strips and five chicken breast bites, served with coleslaw and BBQ sauce.
Wetherspoons also removed the steaks, gammon and mixed grill, in a major blow for its customers.
The pub chain said at the time it wished to freshen up its menu and cut back on items branded “loss-makers” after meat prices increased significantly.
In an email sent to staff, Wetherspoons chief John Huston confirmed that the hearty meals were being removed “after much debate”.
However, in the place of those items, it released a new range of gourmet burgers.
The new selection includes:
- The Big Smoke – Pulled BBQ beef brisket, American-style cheese and maple-cured bacon.
- Buffalo Burger – Fried buttermilk chicken breast with blue cheese, naga chilli sauce and melted cheese.
- Cheese Meltdown – American cheese layered with gooey Emmental and Cheddar cheese sauce.
The chain also rolled out a new Korean-style chicken range.
There are also veggie options available, which are served between 8am and midday.
