Welsh Open match halted due to medical emergency in stands as Mark Selby alerts ref | Other | Sport

A Welsh Open snooker match between Mark Selby and John Higgins was suspended due to a medical emergency in the crowd.

Leading 2-1 in the nine-frame contest, Selby was lining up a shot to pot the red into the bottom-left pocket when something in the crowd caught his eye.

Immediately, the 41-year-old informed the referee about an incident by saying “excuse me”, letting him know that an incident occurred with a spectator requiring medical attention.

And shortly after, medical staff were spotted by television cameras arriving on the scene as they rushed to the person’s aid.

It is yet to be determined what caused the person to become unwell or what their current condition is.

Commentator David Hendon kept viewers informed of the events unfolding in Wales as play came to a grinding halt just before 2pm (GMT).

“Well, the noise is off. There may well be a medical emergency so they’re going to stop playing while a member of the audience gets some audience,” he said.

“There’s going to be a delay here, and quite rightly, for the help to arrive. There are plenty of staff who are medics, so whoever needs help will get it for sure.

A person was then heard audibly saying: “Can I get some space there please?” as they navigated their way through the narrow spaces between the seats.

Selby took the opportunity to have a glass of water during the break and the players then walked off to applause from members of the audience.

World Snooker issued a statement confirming that a spectator had suffered an illness during the match and announced play would resume shortly after.

It said: “A spectator has been taken ill in the crowd. Play will resume at 2:15pm.”

The BBC coverage cut away from the match action, while Eurosport returned to its studio coverage with Jimmy White and presenter Rachel Casey, who described it was a “very unfortunate situation”.

Casey then added: “We send our very best wishes to the person who has taken ill in the audience.

“The players have left the arena as you can see behind us and hopefully we’ll have play underway. Hopefully that person is OK.”
