A star from the popular series Wednesday is virtually unrecognisable in Netflix’s risqué new adult comedy which was once cancelled before release.
Available exclusively on the streaming giant from today (August 13), the film Fixed boasts a star-studded cast, but fans may struggle to identify the familiar faces due to their animated counterparts.
The latest release is an animated film that stands out from the crowd, with a host of recognisable voices lending their talents to the characters.
The art style will strike a chord with those who grew up watching Cartoon Network, as the film is the brainchild of acclaimed writer and director Genndy Tartakovsky.
Widely regarded as a legend in the animation industry, Tartakovsky is the creative force behind Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, and Primal.
Tartakovsky also penned scripts for The Powerpuff Girls and Star Wars: Clone Wars series. He is the mastermind behind all the Hotel Transylvania films, even lending his voice to the character Blobby since the third instalment in 2018, reports the Mirror.
Fixed tells the tale of Bull, an average, good-natured dog who learns he’s about to be neutered. As the reality of this life-changing event sinks in, Bull decides he needs one last adventure with his best mates, given these are the final 24 hours with his precious parts. What could possibly go wrong?
The impressive voice cast is headlined by Pitch Perfect and The Righteous Gemstones actor Adam Devine, who voices Bull. He is joined by Idris Elba, voicing Rocco, and Agatha All Along actress Kathryn Hahn as Honey.
Saturday Night Live veteran Bobby Moynihan voices Lucky whilst Fred Armisen, known for portraying Uncle Fester in Netflix’s Wednesday series, takes on the role of Fetch. For those still uncertain of his identity, he’s the spectacle-wearing canine.
The film’s release has been a considerable time in the making. Warner Bros initially axed it as part of cost-cutting initiatives and Netflix declined it in 2024.
A year on and it’s now available for streaming. When questioned about what they would have done had the movie never seen the light of day, star Devine quipped: “I would burn Hollywood to the ground. I would have retired, I would have moved back to Omaha, Nebraska and become a real estate agent. That was my back-up plan, but I do think I would have been a great real estate agent.”
Now the picture has finally emerged, critiques are beginning to surface online. Whilst initial responses were largely favourable, professional reviews have proved predominantly lukewarm.
Currently, it maintains a 68% score on Rotten Tomatoes. There’s acclaim for the vocal performances and animation technique, however many are ultimately deterred by the film’s explicit content.
One reviewer stated: “Fitfully funny and laudable for its veneration of classic animation styles. But Genndy Tartakovsky’s latest film mostly corners the market (and marks the corner) on every obvious punchline about neutered dogs and too rarely reaches for laughs beyond them.”
Another viewer commented: “What is the Purpose of this film? Sure it has a funny concept… but after the first 20 minutes it gets old sadly… I just wanted more from this. Surely an Homage to old school animation but its missing the charm.”
However, there are others who recommend viewing it, albeit just to see it exists. One review stated: “What Tartakovsky delivers with the shackles off is enough of a reason to support this absurdly vulgar animated film. Netflix has saved a movie that needs to be seen to be believed.”
Another person claimed: “It’s clear that Fixed is, very much, a movie that is not for everyone. But those who do get on its particular wavelength will be rewarded by one of the most original and surprising animated features of the past few years.”
