The wealthy California tech CEO accused of murdering his wife during a bitter divorce battle with millions of dollars at stake is now facing the death penalty, it was revealed in court on Thursday.

Gordon Abas Goodarzi, 66, who appeared in a San Bernardino court wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, did not speak when the district attorney made a “special circumstances filing,” saying Goodarzi killed his wife for financial gain.

The updated charges make Goodarzi eligible for the death penalty for allegedly murdering estranged wife Aryan Papoli, 58, whose lifeless body was found at the bottom of a cliff in November.

Papoli’s body was found down a steep embankment off the side of the road in Crestline, roughly 70 miles east of Los Angeles, on Nov. 18. Google Street View
