'We tried four hot cross bun flavours from Tesco and there was one clear winner'

Diverging from the original Hot Cross Buns you come across around Easter, Tesco has shared four innovative flavours.

There are Tesco’s Finest Triple Chocolate Hot Cross Buns, St Clements Hot Cross Buns, Strawberries and Clotted Cream Hot Cross Buns and Apple and Cinnamon Hot Cross Buns.

Tesco’s Finest Triple Chocolate Hot Cross Buns

Starting with Tesco’s Finest Triple Chocolate Hot Cross Buns, reviewers – ranging from journalists to art directors and facilities staff – were impressed.

Edging around the seven to eight (out of 10) mark, one pleased reviewer said they had “good texture” and were “not at all dry”.

One, however, said they “taste like a muffin” while another said it’s a good option “if you like chocolate”.

Overall score: 8/10

Tesco’s Finest St Clements Hot Cross Buns

Moving on to Tesco’s Finest St Clements Hot Cross Buns, the consensus around the office was less positive.

One described them as “sticky and a bit dry” and others were disappointed with a lack of “zesty” flavour.

While there was “a good amount of fruit” in the hot cross buns, they were “not very zesty” and “not very orangey”.

People rated the St Clements Hot Cross Buns a mediocre five out of 10, which makes them a very “meh” treat.

Overall score: 5/10

Tesco’s Finest Strawberries and Clotted Cream Hot Cross Buns

As for Tesco’s Finest Strawberries and Clotted Cream Hot Cross Buns, there were mixed reviews.

Those rating the buns as low as four complained of the “sickly sweet smell” and “artificial flavour”.

People more pleased with the Strawberries and Clotted Cream version said they are “good if you have a sweet tooth”.

Another – who rated them six out of 10 – said it’s a “good bun” that is “moist”, but it’s the strawberry that is “not so nice”.

Overall score: 6/10

Tesco’s Finest Apple and Cinnamon Hot Cross

Finally, Tesco’s Finest Apple and Cinnamon Hot Cross Buns also received mixed results.

While scoring a decent six out of 10, there were a couple of four out of 10 ratings.

One giver of the lower score explained: “It’s sticky, and there’s not much apple or cinnamon flavour.”

Upon review, it would seem that Tesco’s Finest Triple Chocolate Hot Cross Buns came out on top with an impressive score of eight out of 10.

Overall score: 6/10
