Warning to tourists in Benidorm as Spanish seaside resort issues ban with £425 fines | World | News

British holidaymakers heading to the popular seaside resort of Benidorm have been warned of a regulation which comes with a hefty price tag. Local authorities are cracking down on mobility scooters, with those breaking the law facing a £425 fine. With the Spanish town seeing more than 600,000 visitors from the UK in 2024 alone, those planning to make a trip this summer have been warned against improper use.

Benidorm has a reputation for attracting elderly Brits, a large number of which rely on mobility scooters to get around. However, local law explicitly states that you must be aged over 55 years old or have a certified disability for walking in order to rent an electric scooter.

Those opting to rent one from one of the many mobility providers in the region are required to give a cash deposit, alongside signing a contract.

Following a rise in complaints of tourists renting the scooters for fun, without the required insurance, the council has emphasised the rules of using the vehicles. Violating any of these rules risks an eye-watering fine of up to €500 (£425), which would quickly put a dampener on your holiday.

Mobility Solutions Direct has issued fresh guidance, warning of the increased police scrutiny regarding the insurance of mobility scooter users.

Lee Cartwright, an expert from the company, said: “The resort is facing issues due to its popularity, particularly with the increasing complaints about mobility scooters.

“Problems arise from people renting them just for fun. The local council has expressed a desire for these scooters to be used responsibly and only for genuine needs.”

Mr Cartwright advised getting proper insurance to offer vital protection. He also says to avoid unnecessary use. “If you can walk safely without one and you don’t have a permit for one, it is best not to ride a mobility scooter to avoid a fine,” he added.

The expert also said to adhere to the speed limits and to not carry another person on your mobility scooter, as they are strictly for sole use.
