Firefighters have issued a stark warning to air fryer owners after a TikTok cleaning hack caused a fire that led to a mass evacuation in Bournemouth.
Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service responded to a blaze at Prosperity House on Saturday, February 15, after an air fryer caught fire when its owner attempted a viral cleaning method.
Multiple fire engines were dispatched following the activation of fire alarms.
Upon arrival, crews discovered a fire had broken out in a first-floor kitchen, but it had already been extinguished by the building’s sprinkler system.
The incident forced around 50 residents to evacuate.
The cause of the fire was linked to a social media cleaning hack in which air fryer users fill the appliance’s basket with water and soap before turning it on to “steam clean.”
Safe & Well manager Sarah Moore confirmed that the occupier had attempted this method, which resulted in the air fryer sparking and catching fire.
“Air fryers are a great way to cook in an energy-efficient way, but like all appliances, care should be taken to use them safely,” said Moore.
“The manufacturer’s advice for cleaning and maintenance should always be followed to reduce the risk of a fire.”
The fire service is urging users to follow manufacturer guidelines and general safety precautions when using air fryers, including unplugging the appliance when not in use, keeping it in a well-ventilated area, and ensuring hot air vents do not blow into electrical outlets.
As TikTok trends continue to gain popularity, authorities are reminding the public that not all internet hacks are safe, especially when it comes to electrical appliances.
