Police in Palma started a major crackdown on illegal parking at the airport over the past weekend.

In some cases, Drivers were issued fines of up to €200 (£167), while others were given warnings.

Officers want to stop motorists from parking on access roads close to the airport while waiting for arriving passengers.

Drivers have been told they can park for free in the AirPort Express area for up to 15 minutes.

“Drivers can park up, free of charge, in the Airport Express area and in many parts it is strictly illegal,” police said in a statement.

“It is always best to check with the airline or the airport when going to collect a passenger to establish whether the flight is on time; this will avoid long waits,” they added. “Our officers saw people parking up anywhere and they were told to move on.”

Last year, just over 33 million passengers passed through the airport, a 7% increase on 2023.

Of the total number of commercial passengers, around nine million travelled on domestic routes, a 5% rise.

While just over 24 million flew on international flights, an increase of 7.8%.

Palma de Majorca airport is run by the Aena Group, and I sone of 46 operated in Spain by the company.

London-Luton Airport is also part of the company’s portfolio, as are 17 other airports in Brazil.

Palma airport has received mixed reviews from passengers, with one couple describing it as a “real dump”.
