Some UK cities are more accommodating than others for tourists who prefer to explore on foot.
Europe is home to many walkable city-break destinations, such as Budapest, Edinburgh, Athens, Bruges, Venice, Amsterdam, and Paris.
Fortunately for those who don’t want to catch a flight, several major cities in England are ideal for exploring on foot.
According to the expert team at Preply, Liverpool is one of the most walkable destinations in the UK, with less than five miles separating its major attractions.
It would take just over an hour and a half to stroll around the city’s key landmarks, which adds to Liverpool’s appeal, as it was recently named one of the UK’s most attractive cities.
In a ranking that crowned Edinburgh the most attractive, Liverpool came second with 74 landmarks per 100,000 residents.
The regenerated Albert Dock area, which houses the Tate Art Gallery, Beatles Museum, and numerous cafes and restaurants, is the city’s top-rated attraction on Tripadvisor.
Another popular site is Liverpool Cathedral, which offers stunning city views and is just a half-hour walk from Albert Dock. Few know it is one of the world’s largest and tallest cathedrals and a top Anglican church building.
It’s also the fifth largest cathedral in the world, competing with the incomplete Cathedral of St John the Divine in New York.
As for festive attractions, Liverpool’s Christmas market remains open until Tuesday, December 24 (Christmas Eve) until 5pm. Until then, visitors will find it open between 11am and 10pm, daily, at St George’s Plateau, just outside St George’s Hall, and across the street from Liverpool Lime Street Station.
The market is just a short walk from Central Station and Queen Square Bus Station. There is parking nearby at St John’s Shopping Centre, the Queen Square Q Park, and Mount Pleasant Car Park.
Some visitors have criticised the food stalls at the market, but there’s plenty of great alternatives in Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle.
Hailed as one of the globe’s trendiest districts by Time Out, the Triangle is a former industrial zone that boasts some of the city’s top bars. The highly pedestrian-friendly area also houses numerous independent galleries and a vibrant street food scene.
Football fans will also want to visit Anfield Stadium, one of Liverpool’s top-rated attractions, although public transport will be necessary as it’s slightly outside the city centre.
