Moment plane veers to one side seconds after take-off

Shocking video footage has shown the moment a plane flips almost upside down before exploding into a fireball seconds after take-off in Venezuela, killing its two crew. The light aircraft, which appeared to veer violently to one side moments after leaving the runway, crashed back down on its left wing before bursting into flames in front of horrified witnesses, in a clip Express.co.uk has opted not to share in full.

Onlookers could be heard screaming as the pilot struggled to regain control of the aircraft, which ended up almost inverted before smashing into the tarmac and erupting in an explosion that sent thick smoke pouring into the air. The tragedy unfolded just before 10am local time yesterday at Paramillo Aerodrome, an airport serving the Venezuelan city of San Cristobal in the country’s mountainous western region. The two victims, identified as pilot Jose Antonio Bortone Terife, 50, and co-pilot Juan Maldonado, 47, were both killed instantly as flames engulfed the wreckage.

Investigators have launched a full probe into the disaster, with initial speculation suggesting a possible tyre explosion during take-off. Officials have not ruled out pilot error as a contributing factor.

The Piper Cheyenne 1 aircraft, which was reportedly being used for logistical operations linked to the Venezuelan government, was left completely gutted by the inferno.

In a statement, Venezuela’s National Institute of Civil Aviation (INAC) confirmed:

“At 9.52am local time on Wednesday, an aircraft type PAY1, registration YV1443, taking off from Paramillo Airport in the state of Táchira, crashed during take-off.

The corresponding protocols were immediately activated, and the airport’s aeronautical fire brigade responded to the accident.

Unfortunately, both crew members on board were killed. The Civil Aviation Accident Investigation Board was activated as required by the Venezuelan State in order to determine the causes of the accident.”

Pilot Jose Antonio Bortone, who had more than 30 years of experience and 10,300 hours of flying time, was described as a passionate aviator who came from a family steeped in aviation.

On his professional profile, Mr Bortone wrote: “Since I was a child, I have been fascinated by fighter planes.

“Although I did not have the opportunity to join the Venezuelan Air Force, my passion for aviation did not fade.

“My grandfather, who was a pilot for Avensa for 30 years, and my uncles, who instilled in me a love of flying, were my greatest inspiration.

Having gained extensive experience flying various types of aircraft and working for different companies in the sector, I am proud of my professional career and of being able to pursue my passion for aviation.”

His company, EC Charter, where he worked as a pilot, paid a moving tribute on Instagram: “Jose Antonio was an exceptional pilot whose legacy will always be remembered for his dedication, professionalism, and deep commitment to our company.

“Those who had the privilege to know him spoke of his great human quality, charisma, and constant happiness.

“He was a great friend, exemplary father, and husband.

“At these moments of deep sadness, we extend our most sincere and heartfelt condolences to his wife, children, relatives, and loved ones.

“Rest in peace, dear friend. Keep flying high. We will remember you always.”

Tributes also poured in for co-pilot Juan Maldonado, remembered by colleagues and former students as a talented aviator and teacher.

Friend Gloria Santana said: “A great professional and teacher who was passionate about what he did has today been lost to the world.

“Heaven has gained a great man. Rest in peace, my dear teacher Juan.”

As investigators continue to examine the wreckage and review flight data, the aviation community in Venezuela remains in mourning for the two men whose lives were tragically cut short in the shocking crash.
