A clever home hacks and cleaning fan has shared how she manages to keep her vegetables fresher for longer – and stop them browning. Chantel Mila, who goes by Mama Mila on TikTok, shared some of her favourite food storage hacks she uses to give them longevity and ward off any unwanted creepy crawlies.
When it comes to green vegetables, Chantel keeps them long-lasting and stops any sign of wilting or browning by using one common kitchen item. All you need is a piece of kitchen towel. This helps with any excess moisture floating about in the container when it’s stored.
How to keep vegetables fresh
Chantel firstly removes any veggies from their packets and places them in specific containers designed for her fridge. This can help reduce the need for plastic packaging in the home.
Once the vegetables are placed in your container of choice, Chantel advises placing a paper towel on top of the veggies, making sure they’re covered completely. Chantel explained that this will help absorb any excess moisture from the vegetables and prevent them from browning or wilting.
It can also help prevent veggies from becoming slimy. You should also make sure that your vegetables have room to breathe in their container, so avoid packing them too tightly.
The combined effect of moisture absorption and improved air circulation can significantly extend the shelf life of your salad greens. You can expect them to stay fresh for a week or more with proper storage, according to Cosmopolitan Appliances.
While using a dry paper towel can help soak up excess moisture, a few professional chefs actually recommended using a damp towel instead. This helps to keep the greens moist and stops them drying out.
This hack also works for herbs, which can stay fresh and not wilt for up to two to three weeks in the fridge. Food & Wine also recommended placing the herbs in a tightly sealed container or resealable bag, that way it will prevent oxygen from entering and the leaves from wilting.
