Valtteri Bottas is reportedly set to reunite with former team Mercedes in a reserve driver role for the 2025 season. The 10-time Grand Prix winner’s departure from Sauber was confirmed on Wednesday with Gabriel Bortoleto brought in to replace him.
Bottas has actually enjoyed a strong 2024 campaign, dominating team-mate Zhou Guanyu on a weekly basis and emphasising the pace that he can still produce. However, with 37-year-old Nico Hulkenberg already signed for next season, Mattia Binotto has opted for youth in the second seat.
Speaking after Wednesday’s announcement, Bottas said: “A situation like this is never easy for anyone. But after all the good and in-depth discussions we had in the past weeks, we realised that the conditions to grow this project together were not met.
“These past years with the team have been an incredible journey, full of growth, challenges, and unforgettable moments. I’m grateful for the joint experiences as well as the trust and support I’ve felt every step of the way. Though it’s time to move on, I’ll always carry a piece of this team with me, and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for us both.”
With the only remaining spot on the 2025 grid being at VCARB, Bottas’ time as a full-time F1 driver looks to be over. However, he still has a chance to stay in the paddock next season, should he agree terms with his former team Mercedes.
According to a report from Autosport, discussions between Toto Wolff’s team and Bottas’ representatives have been ongoing for ‘several weeks’. With 18-year-old Kimi Antonelli joining the team in 2025, the Finn has the opportunity to help develop one of the sport’s most exciting prospects.
Bottas hinted at the move ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix last, telling the media: “Firstly, the priority is to stay as a race driver, that’s what I want, and that’s what I’m pushing for with Mattia.
“But, of course, as I don’t have anything signed – we’re in October – I’ve got to look at all the alternatives including going back to the Mercedes family. That’s for sure one option and I would consider it.”
However, should a full-time opportunity not come about for 2026, Bottas will likely switch his attention to IndyCar, which he has previously stated a desire to experience.
