Around one in 20 Brits say Valentine’s Day is now “too expensive to celebrate”.
A new survey has found those who spend cash on February 14 splash out around £39 on their partner.
Around 7% of those who celebrate the occasion admit to spending between £91 and £100.
The survey was carried out by researchers Opinium.
Around a fifth – 18% – of people surveyed felt as though Valentine’s Day had become too commercial.
However, one in 12 say they are a fan of the occasion, feeling it is a excuse to be romantic.
Only 3% said it was their favourite day of the year.
Going out for a meal and cooking for each other were found to be the most popular ways people like to treat their partners on Valentine’s Day, according to the research carried out for website MyVoucherCodes.
The site also suggested a range of ways to show your affection on Valentine’s Day without breaking the bank.
MyVoucherCodes suggests homemade gifts – such as love coupons, scrapbooks, or a daily affirmation jar – are a cheap way to show your partner affection.
It says you could also gift your loved one wildflowers, with freshly picked daffodils, snowdrops or witch hazel making a bright present.
Other suggestions of low-cost presents included keepsakes, novelty gifts and self care essentials, all of which can be picked up at under £20 if you shop around.
