Using common household items can help to speed up de-icing windscreen during winter freeze

The expert recommended that drivers can quickly remove any ice on their vehicle’s windscreen by using a lemon.

According to LeaseCar.uk, squeezing lemon juice onto the windscreen will cause the ice to be broken down by the acid it contains.

However, to avoid leaving any sticky marks on the windows, drivers are also advised to then rinse the cleared screen using lukewarm water.

Another tip offered by the company was to sprinkle some salt onto the screen, which again will quickly melt the ice.

Similar to how roads are gritted to remove ice, pouring a solution of salt and water onto the windscreen will break down the ice quickly.

In addition, ice can also be removed from door mirrors by using saltwater on a sponge, however care should be taken to prevent any from going onto the bodywork, which may cause damage.

Finally, LeaseCar.uk advised that icy windscreens can be prevented altogether if a motorist applies an onion the night before.

By chopping an onion in half and rubbing it across the windows of the car, a coating will prevent ice from sticking to the screen.

This trick can also be used with a potato on the inside of the windscreen to prevent condensation from forming.
