Used car expert shares three models that hold their value best

A top motoring personality has taken to YouTube to urge used car buyers to consider models made by three brands which hold their value the best. Adam Morris is an Australian petrolhead who presents videos on the ReDriven YouTube channel, regularly giving advice to help drivers find the best used car for them and avoid models with common issues. In a recent video, Adam discusses the car brands that hold their value the best over a space of two to seven years, with Toyota topping the list with their wide range of cars.

He said: “Looking at this list, I doubt any of us are going to be surprised that the winner is Toyota, but just wait until you see some of the figures. As a brand, Toyotas retain 89.1% of their value. That alone is impressive when you consider the spread of vehicles that they offer – everything from the Supra coupe to the Hiace van to the Land Cruiser SUV to the Camry saloon.”

Whilst Toyota was praised for offering a particularly wide range of new models, a study by Auto Express found that the Land Cruiser is the Toyota model that holds its value the best in the UK.

The rugged Range Rover rival typically retains 63.94% of its value after three years, meaning the average model made in 2022 currently sells for £47,950.

Toyota’s luxurious sub-brand Lexus also offers models that hold their value well, including the NX. The compact crossover typically retains 61.66% of its value after three years.

Later in the video, Adam also suggested that Suzukis are particularly good for drivers looking to get a good price when they need to sell their model, with some examples of the Jimny off-roader selling for more than they cost new.

He added: “Yep, a brand known for making tough, simple, and hilariously fun little nuggets are also a safe financial bet. The third-best performer in the range was the Baleno, with a retained value of 85.9%; the second is the legendary Swift, retaining 86.1 of its value.

“But the clear winner is the Suzuki Jimny, with a retained value of 109.2%. Now, to give you some perspective, even the very early models that sold here for $25,000 (£12,500) brand new are still asking for more than that on the used market. We’ve seen some examples fitted with accessories swapping hands for $40,000 (£20,000)!”

Finally, Adam suggested that drivers looking for something with practicality choose an Isuzu D-Max, with the surprisingly simple range holding its value well.

He said: “Now, you know how some brands have 30 different models, and each of these comes in a few dozen different trim specs and an endless array of optional extras? Not Isuzu! They don’t even have a top three financial performers on the list because they only sell two models here.

“There’s the D-Max and the MU-X. The D-Max is the best, with a retained value of 81.9%.”
