Use 65p item in your garden to boost flowers and keep pests away

A common kitchen item that can be bought for 65p could be the key to a lush garden. As well as using it for baking, obviously, many people use baking soda to clean around their homes.

But the cupboard staple can help your garden, too, according to MarthaStewart.com. The outlet reports that it is a “a superstar of sorts for enhancing plant productivity” – for starters, pests, especially slugs, can’t tolerate its salt levels, and ants “tend to lose their scent trails” with it.

As well as this, spraying plant leaves with a solution of water, a few drops of washing up liquid, and a “dash” of baking sofa can also keep fungal infections at bay. You should repeat this each week, after rain has washed away the spray.

Small amounts of baking soda can also act as a soil enhancer, boosting your flowers, although you should “avoid plants that could be damaged by a high pH level”. And if that wasn’t enough, baking soda can also kill weeds – simply spray the weeds with water before dusting baking soda over them.

Rusty tools in the garden shed? Baking soda comes in handy here, too. Baking soda can remove rust if you create a paste with water. Apply this to the rusted areas and leave it for a while, before scrubbing it off with a cloth or brush.

Baking soda can be bought for 65p at Tesco and Aldi.
