Donald Trump’s face is poised to feature on a one dollar coin as the US prepares to mark 250 years of independence, reports said. A draft design of the $1 coin shows the US President’s profile on one side and Mr Trump standing with a raised, clenched fist in front of the Stars and Stripes. The words “fight, fight, fight” run around the edge.
In response to reports of the coin, anti-Trump group, Republicans against Trump, wrote on social media: “Welcome to the banana republic.” The draft design was overseen by the Office of the US Treasurer, Brandon Beach.
A Treasury Department spokesperson said in a statement quoted by Politico: “Despite the radical left’s forced shutdown of our government, the facts are clear: Under the historic leadership of President Donald J. Trump, our nation is entering its 250th anniversary stronger, more prosperous, and better than ever before.
“While a final $1 dollar coin design has not yet been selected to commemorate the United States’ semiquincentennial, this first draft reflects well the enduring spirit of our country and democracy, even in the face of immense obstacles.”
In a post on social media, Mr Beach shared an image of the draft design and said: “No fake news here. These first drafts honoring America’s 250th Birthday and @POTUS are real.
“Looking forward to sharing more soon, once the obstructionist shutdown of the United States government is over.”
The shutdown came after Republicans and Democrats failed to agree to pass a Bill which would fund government services into this month and beyond.
In the US, the different branches of government must reach agreement on spending plans before they become law.
News of the Trump dollar coin has been hailed to the president’s supporters. Commentator Steve Guest said: “America is back, and so is the one-dollar coin.
“Donald Trump will forever be the face of America’s 250th Birthday, thanks to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Mr Beach. These first drafts show that our nation is ready to fight, fight, fight!”
Living people rarely feature on US notes and coins. In 2020, Congress passed legislation which was signed by Mr Trump that permits the Treasury Secretary to issue one dollar coins in 2026.
According to Politico, the design of such coins must be “emblematic of the United States semiquincentennial”.
