Those who own motorhomes and campervans have been warned about the soaring amount of thefts taking place over the festive season.

The warning comes following data from the Office for National Statistics showing that motorhomes left unlocked are the most common target for vehicle-related theft in the country.

Now, insurance experts have raised concerns about the Christmas period as many owners spend less time travelling in their vehicles, leaving them at risk and giving more opportunities to thieves.

Motorhome Protect insisted that even short periods of leaving vehicles unlocked can allow thieves to get their hands on them.  Additionally, the winter season having longer nights acts as another advantage for thieves as the dark nights allow for more cover for those committing crimes.

Mark Sheppard, senior manager at Motorhome Protect, said: “Around Christmas time, motorhomes are likely used less, which can make it a popular time for thieves to target them. At Motorhome Protect, we want to ensure every owner is protected.

“We hope by highlighting some common errors people may make when it comes to their vehicles safety, owners can take steps to avoid them and ensure their home on wheels is safe this festive season.”

Reports revealed that there are an estimated 755,000 touring caravans and motorhomes in use across the country and the number is expected to rise to 889,466 by 2030.

With that, thefts of the vehicles and belongings kept inside are on the rise, secruity experts have warned as the record of previous incidents has revealed how big of a problem it has become.

Owners have also been warned to be extra careful about where they park their vehicles during the festive period. Well-lit locations are recommended over secluded areas as they might provide cover for potential thieves.

Experts have also said that paperwork should never be left inside motorhomes, as thieves can use the documents to help sell stolen vehicles.

Steering wheel locks, clutch claws and wheel and gearbox clamps can all act as deterrents for thieves planning on stealing vehicles.

It’s also a good idea to install outdoor security lights where motorhomes are parked, as it can alert owners to any movement and discourage criminal activity
