Urgent warning issued to anyone travelling to South Africa | World | News

An urgent warning has been issued to Brits planning to visit South Africa.

The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has cautioned Brits against travelling to parts of the country due to potential unrest near its border with Mozambique.

According to the latest travel advisory, tensions remain high following significant unrest in Mozambique after its national elections on October 9, 2024.

While the situation has improved since late December, officials warn that sporadic violence and disruption could still occur without notice, particularly at key border crossings.

One area of particular concern is the Lebombo border crossing near Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, which has seen long queues leading to security incidents.

The FCDO has reported instances of armed robberies and express kidnappings, where criminals abduct victims for short periods to extort cash before releasing them.

Travellers are advised to stay vigilant and avoid crossing the border during periods of heightened tension. The FCDO urges people to seek local advice and monitor travel guidance for both South Africa and Mozambique before making any plans.

Beyond the border regions, the FCDO warns that protests and demonstrations can erupt suddenly anywhere in South Africa.

While not all protests turn violent, some have led to roadblocks, clashes with law enforcement and dangers for bystanders.

City centres and townships are particularly vulnerable to disruption, and British tourists are advised to avoid these areas during unrest, remain on main roads, and stay updated through local news and social media.

Additionally, the FCDO cautions travellers not to rely solely on GPS navigation, as it may inadvertently direct them through less secure areas.

To minimise risks while visiting South Africa, the FCDO recommends that travellers:

  • Monitor local and social media for real-time updates on potential disturbances.
  • Avoid areas where protests or demonstrations are taking place.
  • Stick to main roads and avoid isolated or high-risk locations.
  • Stay cautious at border crossings, particularly near Lebombo.
  • Refrain from attempting to bypass protester roadblocks, as these situations can escalate quickly.
