A ready meal product sold at Waitrose has been recalled over concerns that it could trigger life-threatening allergic reaction. Some pack of the Waitrose Indian Takeaway for 2 were mispacked with spring rolls which contain sesame and soya.
The allergens were not mentioned on the label, meaning the product “is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to sesame and/or soya”. Sesame is the most common type of seed allergy and around one in 300 adults have soya allergies.
A notice issued by the Food Standards Agency said: “If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to sesame and/or soya, do not eat it.
“Instead, return it to your local Waitrose and Partners branch for a full refund.”
The recall applies to 1412g packs with a use by date of July 25, 2025.
Symptoms of a food allergy include a tingling or itchy feeling in the mouth and swelling of the lips, face or eyes.
A red raised rash, stomach pain and vomiting may also occur.
Most people with a soya allergy have mild symptoms but in rare cases it can cause a more serious reaction known as anaphylaxis.
More severe symptoms include swelling or tightening of the airways, breathing difficulty, dizziness and sudden sleepiness.
The FSA said Waitrose and Partners was advised to contact relevant allergy organisations to alert their members.
