Urgent recall issued for sausages sold by Sainsbury’s and Waitrose

Sausages have been recalled from major UK supermarkets over fears they could trigger allergic reactions. The Jolly Hog is recalling its Leek Porkers sausages because they contain milk which is not mentioned on the label.

The sausages are sold at Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Morrisons, with the Food Standards Agency (FSA) labelling them as a “possible health risk” for anyone with a milk allergy or intolerance. The recall applies to The Jolly Hog Leek Porkers 6 British Sausages range, weighing 400g and with a use by date of September 28, 2025.

The Jolly Hog said: “If you have bought the above product with the date affected and have a milk allergy, we advise you not to eat them.”

It added: “Customers are asked to bring to their nearest store and a full refund will be issued for the product. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your cooperation.”

The FSA said: “The Jolly Hog is recalling The Jolly Hog Leek Porkers 6 British Sausages because they contain milk which is not mentioned on the label.

“This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents. This recall affects Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Morrisons stores only.”

Cow’s milk is believed to be the most common cause of food allergy in children in the UK. Even a small amount can be enough to trigger a reaction.

The exposure of cow’s milk to those allergic can cause a serious, life-threatening allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. This can lead to a drop in blood pressure and loss of consciousness.

In 2023, Hannah Jacobs died after consuming a hot chocolate from Costa Coffee, which was made with cow’s milk instead of the soy milk she was meant to have. The 13-year-old had a severe dairy allergy.

An inquest heard how her mother informed staff at the cafe in Barking, east London, of her dairy allergy. However, miscommunication meant the wrong milk was used.
