Customers are being urged not to eat from certain jars of sushi ginger sold at Waitrose and ASDA, over fears they may contain glass. Manufacturer Kelly Loves is recalling one batch of the product “due to a potential risk of glass contamination”.

A notice issued on behalf of the company by the Food Standards Agency warned that 150ml jars with the batch code UK12019 may be “unsafe to eat”. A statement from the company added: “While the product has been removed from shelves as a precautionary measure, we are now extending the recall to customers who may have purchased the affected product. Other Kelly Loves Sushi Ginger batches/products are not affected by this recall. Customers are advised not to consume this product batch.”

Pickled ginger is often served with sushi as a palate cleanser, helping to refresh your taste buds between pieces to appreciate all the unique flavours.

Ginger is also thought to have health benefits including aiding digestion, relieving nausea and reducing inflammation.

The notice added: “We would like you to kindly return the affected product to the store you purchased it from, and you will be granted a full refund (no receipt required).

Founded by Kelly Choi, Kelly Loves is a food brand that offers a selection of Japanese and Korean snacks, meals and drinks.

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your cooperation.”

Glass shards or splinters can sometimes contaminate food during the production, packing or handling processes.
