‘Unspoilt’ seaside village is like stepping back in time | UK | Travel

One fishing village tucked away on the coast of Cornwall boasts rows of postcard-worthy white-washed houses, and turquoise seas that gently bob the fishing boats in its tiny harbour.

Polperro is largely untouched and “feels like stepping back in time”, according to Visit Cornwall.

Driving into the village is when you will first notice you feel as though you are living in a different era. The winding road is largely free of traffic, according to Visit Cornwall.

This means you can also safely wander the streets carefree, browsing the host of independent shops selling gift-worthy, locally made crafts and confectionery.

Steeped in smuggling and fishing history, aside form the beautiful views, one of Polperro’s best offerings is their unique smuggling and fishing museum. Polperro’s fishing history dates back to 1303, according to Britain Express.

However, it developed as a smuggling hotspot at the advent of fishing’s decline in the 18th century before more stringent coast guarding rules were enforced.

One Tripadvisor reviewer said of the museum: “Very interesting museum; lovely young lady gave us lots of useful information. Thank you for being so helpful. Fascinating insight into the local area- fishing, smuggling and all sorts!”

For the foodies there are also a range of award winning pubs and restaurants. This includes Turntable pizza which is rated at a very unusual full five stars on Tripadvisor.

One reviewer wrote: “Really good, fresh pizza. The queue was out of the door, but considering that, the wait was not long. We had just arrived, were hungry and tired. The whole town was crowded and we couldn’t find a table anywhere. Perfect solution. We ate at our kitchen table and everyone loved it, especially the toddler. Warning though – the spicy pizzas are very spicy!”

This village is also a hotspot for artists, with galleries dotted around the village. You can round off your trip by making the hike up the coastal path to look down on the picture perfect landscape of the village below.

The South West coast path is can also be accessed from Talland Bay, meaning you can walk from one cove to another and end your trip at Polperro.

With some walkers noting you should be aware the path often sits very close to the cliff edge, other raved about the beautiful views.

One walker wrote: “Amazing views . Park up for the day at the top of Polperro, meander through it’s picture perfect winding lanes and head out on the footpath to Talland Bay. There you will find a pretty little cove and cafe to rest a while before heading back to spend the rest of the afternoon back in Polperro. Plenty of lovely little shops, boat trips and excellent pubs and eateries.”
