Autumn staycation plans are well underway for many Brits, who are opting for cosy retreats, hearty meals and seasonal rambles instead of sun-drenched getaways overseas. Recent research by credit card firm Aqua analysed various factors including accommodation costs, search patterns, and meteorological conditions, identifying one coastal destination as the top pick.
Hot on the heels of the leading duo – Torquay and Blackpool – sits the beloved seaside resort of Portsmouth. The investigation found that a weekend break at this wallet-friendly maritime location could cost as little as £88. This represents merely £14 more than the chart-topping choice, Torquay, which offers £74 weekend escapes.
Among Portsmouth’s most compelling autumn attractions is its breathtaking shoreline panorama, where promenades along South Parade Pier and the vibrant waterfront provide an enchanting setting.
During early November, the resort presents magnificent pyrotechnic shows and bonfire celebrations, frequently paired with local festivities and refreshment vendors.
Holidaymakers have expressed their enthusiasm on review platform Tripadvisor, praising the regional warmth and taverns, alongside the tranquil environment for those seeking respite from metropolitan chaos.
Christopher S commented: “Old Portsmouth is a great place to spend a full day, you have the hot walls beach, the Cathedral and some great pubs which are child friendly, Still & West and The Spice Island inn are great if you like ships.”
Dean Nelson commented: “A lovely place for a chilled walk away from the hustle and bustle of the city. A great selection of pubs, shops and places to eat.”
Hillary D shared her experience: “We were visiting Portsmouth to celebrate my husband’s birthday.
“We walked to the old town from Gunwharf Quays in search of an independent pub, we found The Duke of Buckingham, excellent!
“We also walked to the old city walls and looked out to sea, lovely!”.
