Fans of war films are urged to watch a 2019 movie boasting a star-studded cast, including Kiera Knightley, Alexander Skarsgård and Jason Clarke.

Set in the British occupation zone in post-war Germany in 1945, the film follows Rachael Morgan (Knightley) who arrives in Hamburg to be reunited with her husband Lewis (Clarke).

Lewis is a colonel of British Forces Germany charged with rebuilding the shattered city under the Allied Control Council.

As they navigate a tense relationship, they stay at the home of architect Stefan Lubert (Skarsgård) and his teenage daughter.

The film, The Aftermath, has been hailed an ‘underrated gem’ by fans.

The Aftermath is available on Disney Plus and can be rented on AppleTV or Prime Video.

Taking to Google Reviews to share their thoughts, HEA said: “This underrated gem compassionately captures all the horrors of war, for both the victors and the vanquished.

“The grievous losses suffered by each character are portrayed subtly and accurately – you can genuinely understand every character’s behaviors, actions, and motivations, even if you don’t agree with them.”

Sharon Mason branded it “mesmerising throughout”, adding: “Sensitively written, it’s hard to know whom the main character will make a future with (if anyone) but the ending is the most poignant and moving I’ve seen in a long time.

“Quality film. Kiera Knightley gave her all in this film – best performance seen from her.”

The original novel was released in 2014 and was described as a “stunning emotional thriller about our fiercest loyalties and our deepest desires”.

Rhidian Brook is a Welsh novelist, screenwriter and broadcaster who has seen a number of his books adapted into films.

His first novel, The Testimony Of Taliesin Jones, won three prizes and was made into a film of the same name starring Jonathan Pryce.

He also wrote for the BBC series Silent Witness from 2005 to 2007.
