When you think of Italian holidays, you likely think of slow paced days by the seaside, or quiet vineyards but this gorgeous Italian city breaks the mold.

Naples can get a bad rep. People say it’s too busy, or that because it’s the home of the Camorra, a branch of the mob, that it’s dangerous.

Its cobbled streets are painted with graffiti and scooters zip within inches of you at breakneck speeds, and it makes for a wonderful holiday destination.

According to most food experts and critics, Naples is thought to be the best place in Italy – if not the world – to get pizza, as it is considered the birthplace of the classic Neapolitan pizza style.

This pizza style is considered the benchmark for pizza worldwide, featuring a thin, soft crust with a slightly puffy edge.

What’s more, Naples has some of the most incredible food in the world.

Open air stalls sell fresh fish and fruits, corner shops have arancini balls in their windows and at the bars you can sample some of the best aperol or limoncello spritzes you’ve ever had.

As well as all this, Naples is also just a short train journey from Pompeii, where a day isn’t long enough to explore the incredible city that was buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius thousands of years ago.

It’s also just a quick ferry journey over to the isle of Capri where you can hire your own scooter and explore the island with all its incredible coves, beach clubs and bays.

If you’d rather stay local to the city, then the Castel Nuovo is unmissable. This fortress sits above the city and offers incredible panoramic views over Naples, the ocean and mountains off in the distance. You can also explore inside this 13th century castle and go up on the ramparts for an even better view.

Winter temperatures in Naples are lovely too – warm enough to get out and about but not so hot that you’ll be sweating. With an average high of 15C in February, it’s a great time to explore.

Omio has revealed you can get there for £273 return by taking the Eurostar to Paris, then transferring to a high-speed TGV or Trenitalia service from Paris to Milan. From Milan, there are direct trains to Naples that take around 4 hours.

However, if you’d rather fly, then Skyscanner has flights for from £63 (round trip), from London to Naples International Airport.
