UK’s ‘most entertaining’ seaside town revealed and it’s a British icon | UK | News

Summer staycation Brits will soon be flocking to our coast for fun, sun, sea and sand – and one UK resort’s now been hailed the ‘most entertaining’ for holidaymakers. Following an analysis of 26 UK coastal towns, experts analysed entertainment factors such as the number of amusement parks, casinos, live music venues, bars, restaurants, landmarks, beaches, and escape rooms.

And the one to take the coastal crown is famous for its golden sands, miles of stretching promenade, roaring rollercoasters and three historic piers – named North, South and Central. Often associated with classic British holidays, Blackpool in Lancashire boasts 12 amusement and water parks—among them the renowned Pleasure Beach Resort—and 13 casinos, more than any other location in the study.

Blackpool also features 67 notable landmarks, such as the iconic Blackpool Tower and its lively piers, along with 520 bars and restaurants, offering broad appeal for thrill-seekers, culture lovers, and nightlife enthusiasts.

With options ranging from high-energy amusement to tranquil beachside relaxation, Britain’s coastline offers far more than the traditional fish and chips by the sea.

Known for its coastal charm and buzzing atmosphere, Brighton stands out as the second most entertaining seaside destination.

With four beaches to relax on and over 900 bars and restaurants, it’s was seen as the perfect place for laid-back days and lively nights.

The East Sussex seaside city also boasts the highest number of live music venues, 58, and an impressive 19 escape rooms, making it a haven for entertainment lovers.

Southport, just up the coast from Blackpool, ranks third as a top staycation spot, offering a blend of traditional charm and coastal elegance.

With 15 beaches and 52 landmarks, including the historic Southport Pier and scenic Kings Gardens, it’s ideal for a relaxing yet engaging getaway.

Whether you’re exploring Victorian architecture, strolling the seafront, or enjoying a family day out, Southport offers a classic and well-rounded seaside experience.

The others in the top 10 are Bournemouth in Dorset; Swansea in South Wales; Torquay in Devon; Newquay in Cornwall; Portsmouth in Hampshire; Weymouth in Dorset and Llandudno in North Wales.

While at the other end of the spectrum, Morecambe – hometown of Eric Bartholomew aka Eric Morecambe of comedy double act Morecambe and Wise – was named the least entertaining destination in the survey, with limited facilities such as a lack of casinos, theme parks, and escape rooms.

Experts suggest that entertainment offerings should be a key consideration when planning a staycation.

And because they are enabling UK travellers to avoid airport queues and long travel times, British seaside towns continue to deliver engaging, varied, and accessible summer experiences.

SuomiCasino – who commissioned the study – said: “When we travel abroad, many of us picture ourselves lounging by the pool or soaking up the sun on the beach making the most of the warm weather we don’t often get to enjoy in the UK.

“While a staycation can still offer those relaxing moments, the unpredictability of British weather means it’s wise to plan for more than just sunshine.

“That’s why it’s important to choose a destination with a wide range of entertainment options – from arcades and fairground rides to escape rooms, live music, and great places to eat and drink.

“While you can’t control the weather, you can ensure a fun and memorable getaway by picking a place that matches your idea of entertainment.”
