UK weather: Swirling mass of snow and rain 670-miles long heading straight for UK

A swirling mass of snow and rain is bearing down on Britain, the latest weather maps show.

Western Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland look set for snow while a swathe of England and Wales are in for a drenching at 9am on Thursday (February 22), according to maps generated by WX Charts.

Between 0.4mm to seven millimetres of rain per hour will fall across counties including Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire.

Cambridgeshire, Warwickshire, Derbyshire, Hertfordshire, as well as most of southern England and Wales also look set for rain on the same date, according to WX Charts.

The weather maps show snow in west Sutherland, Ross & Cromarty, Inverness-shire and Argyll at 9am on Thursday.

Maps showing more rain and snow come after the Met Office issued a yellow rain warning which applies from midnight until midday on Wednesday (February 21).

The warning applies to Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset, south Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Gwent, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Gwynedd, Monmouthshire, Pembrokeshire, Powys and Vale of Glamorgan.

Rainfall amounts will widely reach 15-25mm, with as much as 50-70mm over higher ground, according to the Met Office. Saturated ground is likely to lead to some disruption, but the rain will clear to the east by the afternoon.

The Met Office warns spray and flooding on roads will make journey times longer. It says there may be some interruption to power supplies and other services as well as homes and businesses flooded

Bus and train services could also be affected with longer journey times, according to the forecaster.
