A major snowstorm is set to hit the UK overnight from Saturday to Sunday, sweeping in from the south and spreading northward, according to latest forecasts.

While Eastern England and Cornwall may escape the storm, around 14cm of snow is expected to blanket parts of Wales and Scotland, and over 40 counties in England could be impacted, according to Metdesk data.

At around 9:00pm on Saturday, Wales and the south of England look to be first in the firing line, with snow covering Southampton up to Birmingham, with London in the centre.

Across the Midlands, snowfall will start light with around 1cm expected, but by Sunday morning, Birmingham could see up to 5cm of snow, and areas in line with Sheffield could see between 3cm and 6cm of snow.

In Wales, the snow will be particularly heavy, with up to 6cm expected in the west by Saturday evening, and as the night progresses, this could increase to as much as 14cm by the early hours of Sunday.

The storm will begin to sweep up to the Midlands at around 3:00am, and Birmingham never appears to be out of the firing line, suggesting it could be majorly affected, according to the maps by WXCHARTS.

Ireland will face snowstorms this weekend too, with the worst conditions also expected to begin in the south and move northward.

The west coast is set to see the heaviest snow, with up to 13cm predicted by Sunday morning, while areas south of Dublin will experience lighter snowfall, around 8cm.

Snow may fall in Belfast, but is not expected to settle in significant amounts.

Meanwhile, Scotland will feel the full force of the storm in its northernmost regions. The east coast, particularly in line with Inverness, could see up to 15cm of snow, making conditions hazardous in the early hours of Sunday.

The Met Office has issues an Amber severe weather warning, predicting that snow will accumulate overnight from Saturday to Sunday. It predicts it will continue to fall in northern England, but that it will turn into rain in the South and midlands.

Further south and in Wales, it predicts a risk of freezing rain, which is when rain freezes instantly as it hits the surface, causing potentially dangerous icy conditions.
