Large areas of Scotland could be set for a devastating snow bomb this evening as the Met Office issues a yellow warning for snow across the country.
A large weather front is currently making its way across the Atlantic, and large parts of the country could see as much as 5cm of snowfall.
The rest of the UK is braced for Storm Darragh, which will likely bring showers and flood risk to large parts of the UK over the weekend.
Separately, the Met Office forecast warns that tonight will see: “Outbreaks of rain, heavy at times will move east overnight, as winds continue to strengthen with gales and later severe gales develop as Storm Darragh arrives.”
It adds that tomorrow will be: “Wet and very windy on Saturday, with severe gales possible in places, particularly in the west with Storm Darragh. Rain falling as snow across parts of northern Scotland.”
The large snowy weather front looks set to make landfall across Scotland from 1800 this evening, prompting the Met Office to issue a yellow warning.
They warn: “A period of snow is expected to affect higher ground of Scotland during Friday evening and overnight into Saturday morning.
“About 2 to 5cm of snow is expected to fall above 200 or 300m with 10 to 20cm above 400m which will bring difficult travelling conditions and some disruption to higher routes. Drifting of lying snow across the very highest routes above 400m may add to the impacts.
“Temporary snow accumulations may also affect lower levels for a time on Friday evening. The snow will become more showery and turn to rain or sleet through Saturday morning.”
The weather looks set to deteriorate across the country throughout the weekend, with Storm Darragh causing orange and red warnings.
Wales could be the worst affected with a red warning in place for wind and an orange warning in place for rain as the area prepares to mitigate the disruption the storm might cause.
In recent weeks, the country has already seen areas flooded following Strom Bert and Storm Conall.
Saturday is likely to be the peak of the bad weather, with Sunday bringing with it calmer albeit colder weather conditions across much of the UK.
The Met Office forecast said: “Sunday and Monday with showers and blustery winds gradually easing. Drier and brighter later Monday and into Tuesday as high pressure build with some mist and fog.”
