Snow flurries are predicted to occur at the end of 2024, and now forecasters predict snow will also bring in the New Year.

Weather maps from WX Charts show large areas of the country smothered in snow.

In fact, at noon on January 1, the blanket may stretch down from Wick in northern Scotland to just north of Birmingham in the Midlands.

Meanwhile, most of Wales will be covered, as will Northern Ireland.

However, the official Met Office long-range forecast does not predict snow for this period, although it does note there may be some “frost and fog”.

However, there is greater consensus over the weather in the lead-up to Christmas. Both WX Charts and the Met Office are predicting snowfall ahead of Christmas Day, although a White Christmas may not come to pass for many Brits.

Although unlike WX Charts, which predicts a dusting as far south as Birmingham on December 22, the Met Office says the snowfall will be restricted to high ground.

“A covering of snow is possible for some hills and mountains as far south as the Peak District by Sunday morning”, it said.

Today:

Early clouds will disperse throughout the morning in the southeast, paving the way for sunny spells in many areas. Persistent wintry showers will continue in the north and west, accompanied by strong gusts along the coastlines.

The brisk northwesterly wind will make it feel chilly.

Tonight:

Showers and winds are expected to subside during the evening, leading to clear spells. However, cloud cover and wind will increase in the northwest, bringing rain later on.

A brief frost is likely under the clear skies.

Friday:

A band of rain will traverse eastwards throughout the day. Showers will follow in the west but will ease off by the evening.

Fresh winds are anticipated, with temperatures becoming milder once more.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Winds are set to intensify over the weekend, reaching gale force in the north and bringing some wintry showers. Despite the season, temperatures will remain mild but are expected to stabilise by Monday.
