  • Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

The UK is in for snowy downpours in the days leading up to Christmas, according to one weather forecaster.

WX Charts is predicting that large areas of Scotland and patches of northern England will see snow on December 22.

Then, the next day, a huge swathe of the country – stretching from the northern tip of Scotland, down to the capital – will see snowfall too.

According to the forecaster, December 22 has an 80-90 % chance of snowy flurries across the whole of Scotland, while, northern England is highly likely to get at least a dusting too.

Unsurprisingly, the temperatures on December 22 will be frosty. In the Scottish Highlands, the mercury will be suub-zero, while in other areas of Scotland it will be at freezing.

England, meanwhile, will see a top temperature of 4C at noon in the south-east, with Wales and Northern Ireland a degree or two lower.

The snowfall on December 23 will see Scotland almost totally blanketed, with the band stretching over Northumberland and Cumbria, down through Lancashire, into the Midlands and reaching London.

Northern Ireland and large chunks of central Wales may also see snow, according to WX Charts.

Today:

Outbreaks of rain soon spreading into Northern Ireland and Scotland, then spreading erratically eastwards into Wales and western England during the afternoon. Largely dry but often cloudy elsewhere. Feeling mild, but winds strengthening throughout the day, especially in the west.

Tonight:

A windy night, with outbreaks of rain spreading across all parts. Heaviest and most persistent rain across western hills, with some clearer albeit showery conditions arriving into the northwest later.

Wednesday:

A blustery and colder day across the north, with showers moving across many parts. Southern areas will see a band of wind and rain move northeastwards, but staying mild here.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Colder for all on Thursday with sunshine and showers, after early rain clears the south. Milder again from Friday but staying changeable and often windy, with further spells of rain.
