By midnight on March 1, the second WXCharts map shows that almost the entire UK will be under heavy rain, with only the two spared counties avoiding the worst conditions.

The rest of the country will be battered by rain, with terrifying dark red and orange colours on the maps indicating severe downpours.

The third map, valid for 6pm on March 1, suggests that the worst of the rain will begin shifting towards mainland Europe as the day goes on.

However, the break from rain could be short-lived. According to another WXCharts map, a second front could sweep in just hours later, bringing another round of heavy rainfall particularly to areas around Manchester, the Midlands, and the southwest of England.

The Met Office’s long-range forecast between Sunday, February 23 and Tuesday, March 4 also predicts rainy conditions, warning of “heavy rain and strong winds” as a deep area of low pressure moves across the UK.

The Met Office says: “The start of this period will be unsettled, with heavy rain and strong winds affecting all parts as a deep area of low pressure crosses just to the north of the UK.”

While the outlook for early March remains uncertain, the Met Office added that further spells of “mild, wet and windy weather” are likely, with drier interludes possible in southern parts of the UK.

Temperatures are expected to be “close to or a little above average,” but if settled conditions do develop, “nights may become colder with a risk of frost”.
