Snow is on the way for parts of the UK as new weather maps show a band of wintry showers sweeping in within hours. According to WX Charts maps valid for Wednesday, October 29, a barrage of snow is set to hit areas in northern Scotland throughout the day. The weather maps show snow depth building in the Highlands and surrounding areas, particularly around Inverness and parts of the Cairngorms.
Some of the heaviest snowfall appears around 6am, with the purple shading on the WX Charts map indicating snow depth of between 5 and 10cm in certain higher parts of the region. The maps also show a swirl of snow moving across northern Scotland throughout Wednesday morning, with some of it continuing into the evening.
By 12pm on Wednesday, the weather maps suggest snow will still be affecting parts of Inverness-shire and Aberdeenshire, while by 9pm, flurries may persist around the Highlands, though conditions look to ease later in the night.
This incoming blast of wintry weather comes as much of the UK braces for unsettled conditions this week.
The Met Office has warned of rain, strong winds and dropping temperatures across the country, with the north set to feel the worst of it.
In its latest five-day forecast, the Met Office said: “Scotland will be rather cloudy and showery, and showers will also develop across Northern Ireland and parts of northern England.
“Elsewhere it looks mostly dry with sunny spells, though southernmost parts of England will have patchy rain. Breezy for many.”
It added: “Tonight, it remains showery in the north overnight with a patchy frost.
Mostly dry with clear spells at first elsewhere, though with some rain then feeding in from the southwest. Breezy.”
WX Charts also shows a deep area of low pressure sitting over the north of the UK during Wednesday, which is likely to bring brisk winds along with the snow.
The Met Office expects Wednesday to bring “a day of sunshine and showers, with brisk winds in the north”, and said that some southern areas will see showers clearing to leave drier and brighter weather.
Later in the week, it is expected to turn wetter and windier again. The Met Office said: “A bright, cold start on Thursday.
“Turning wet and very windy from the southwest. Some brighter weather during Friday and Saturday, though with heavy showers. Becoming milder. Remaining rather windy.”
