A snow storm could hit 13 UK cities in March, weather maps suggest. Weather maps generated by WXCharts, which uses Met Desk data, predict snow could sweep across the East and South of the UK on Tuesday March 18 at around 6:00pm.
Middlesbrough, Scarborough and Hull could experience up to 1cm of snow per hour, which could also creep across towards York, however Newcastle just misses out. The maps show a band of snow will completely cover the South, engulfing England’s capital and all of Kent. Oxford, Reading, London and Southend on Sea could be hit with up to 1cm of snow per hour. The very east coast of Kent will be impacted most significantly, with around 2cm of snow per hour, signalled by the deep purple patch on WXCharts maps, while Brighton will be at the edge of the action and may experience only minor disruption.
Scotland will be the worst hit, with Inverness, Aberdeen and Dundee at the centre of the storm, with parts of the Highlands expected to see between 1-3cm of snowfall per hour. Edinburgh could potentially be in the firing line, but it will escape the worst of the storm, the maps suggest.
Wales seems to miss out on most of the action, with snow predicted to sweep around the country’s eastern arc, missing Cardiff and major cities.
Ireland and Northern Ireland aren’t predicted to be impacted as the weather front is expected to hit the East and sweep round to mainland Europe.
According to the Met Office long range forecast, which looks at the dates between March 18 to April 1, confidence is low in terms of weather patterns for this period.
It says: “There is likely to be a mixture of unsettled and settled spells but it is unclear which will be more dominant. As is typical, parts of the west and northwest will probably be wetter overall with drier conditions in the southeast.
“Above average temperatures are more likely than below though some colder spells remain possible during late March.”
